Today, I'm thrilled to share my favorite trends in outdoor living for 2024. Whether you're a seasoned patio pro or just starting your backyard journey, these trends are sure to inspire your outdoor space this summer. So, let's dive in!
Outdoor Kitchens
One of the standout trends for me right now is outdoor kitchens. I recently visited the HGTV Smart Home and was blown away by the amazing setup. Outdoor kitchens can be customized with built-in grills, mini fridges, pizza ovens, and even sinks. With advancements in outdoor materials, you can get beautiful, durable cabinets that withstand the elements. Plus, you don't need to spend a fortune; there are many affordable pre-fabricated options available.
As an outdoor cooking enthusiast with a smoker, flat-top griddle, and pizza oven, having an organized and functional space is something I'm seriously considering for my home.
Multi-Functional Furniture
In smaller outdoor spaces, versatility is key. Multi-functional furniture adds both function and beauty to your space. For my recent patio refresh, I chose some double-duty pieces from Wayfair. They have a huge selection and fast shipping.
One of my favorite finds is this teak deck box that doubles as a coffee table. The bonus is that it provides ample storage for outdoor gear and games, and it looks stunning. I love that it gives me place to put some of that outdoor clutter!
Another must-have is the viral side table that also serves as a cooler, holding up to 15 lbs of ice and cold drinks. It’s available in multiple colors to match any decor. I love the look of this side table with the fluting around the base. If you are interested in this product- RUN! It keeps selling out!
Lastly, a woven outdoor ottoman adds extra seating or a footrest and can be transformed into a table with a tray. It's water and UV resistant, perfect for my back patio where we always need an extra seat.
Bold Colors and Patterns
Subdued neutral tones have been popular, but bold colors and patterns are making a comeback. You don't need to replace major furniture pieces; small items like pillows, rugs, throws, and planters can easily add color to your space.
This summer, I incorporated calming blues with a ceramic planter featuring blue dot accents and a fun, vibrant umbrella . Even if you're a neutral lover like me, consider adding vibrant hues like fiery reds, electric blues, or citrusy yellows. Mix and match bold patterns for an eclectic, stimulating outdoor experience.
Bringing Indoor Comfort Outside
Comfort is paramount in outdoor living. Investing in plush outdoor couches with water and UV-resistant cushions is a game-changer. Look for weather-resistant materials like resin wicker, teak, or aluminum. If your space isn't covered, furniture covers are essential to extend the life of your pieces.
We love our outdoor sofa, which feels like an extra room. It’s perfect for reading, working on my laptop, or entertaining guests. Cleaning the cushions every spring keeps them looking great year after year.
Extending Your Outdoor Living Season
Extend your outdoor living season with an enclosed or partially covered patio. These versatile spaces protect you from the elements while allowing you to enjoy the outdoors longer. Options include screened-in porches, covered pergolas, or glass-enclosed sunrooms.
Living in Tennessee, a covered patio is essential to avoid the hot sun and rain. Even if you don’t have a built-in space, pre-fabricated pergolas and canopies are great options, especially for renters. They provide shade and can be moved easily.
Entertainment Walls
Take your outdoor space to the next level with entertainment walls featuring TVs, sound systems, and fireplaces. They’re perfect for movie nights, watching your favorite shows, or cheering on your team. While this is a significant investment, it adds luxury and convenience.
For a budget-friendly upgrade, consider a fire pit for ambiance and warmth or set up an outdoor movie night with a projector and screen.
Small, Cozy Outdoor Living
No space is too small for outdoor living. Use space-saving furniture, vertical gardens, and clever storage solutions to make the most of small decks, balconies, and patios. Add color with potted plants, outdoor rugs, and decor accents to create a cozy, inviting atmosphere.
Your outdoor space is an extension of your home, so let your personality shine through. I hope these trends inspire you to create your own outdoor oasis this summer. If you are interested in the full video where I go into more detail on each of these trends, you can find that here.
