Is Farmhouse Style Decor Dead in 2022?

I have a very controversial question for you. Do you think farmhouse style and decor is dead in 2022? I don't think it is, but personally I am kind of sick of it around my home. So if you’re feeling that way too, I’m going to show you how to take your farmhouse items and update them to help them fit into your style today.
I do want to start with a disclaimer before anybody comes after me. ;) If your home is farmhouse style like mine, and you love it, PLEASE KEEP IT! At one point, I really loved the farmhouse style… I mean… hello? My name is Pretty Distressed. Lol. I used to distress every piece I refinished.
But we all change and grow, and I’m just looking for a simpler and cleaner look for my home. I’m really gravitating toward earthy tones and textures, so I’m going to be grabbing farmhouse styled pieces from around my home and giving them a new modern look.
So let’s have fun with some mini-makeovers and update our farmhouse decor!
Materials Used for This Farmhouse Style Decor Flip
7 Farmhouse Style Decor Items to Makeover
I’m going to be doing seven mini-makeovers today. And as I mentioned, I really do love farmhouse style decor. But I’m ready for a change, and I’m super excited to repurpose some of my farmhouse items to give my home a fresh look.
Makeover Farmhouse Glass Milk Bottles
The first makeover is this glass milk bottle which is very farmhouse. I started by removing the top plug and grabbed some black furniture paint that I have.
You can grab any craft paint that you have, but since I obviously have lots of furniture paint around, this is what I used.
I wanted a bit of texture, so I added Dixie Belle’s Sea Spray Thickener. If you don’t have something like this you can use baking soda and it’ll give you the same kind of texture. As you mix it in, it gives the paint a brownie batter-like consistency.
When your paint dries, it gives it a really beautiful concrete look and texture.
When applying it, I did a stippling motion with my paintbrush so that when it dries, I get a ceramic vase look. This paint also dries with a matte finish, so it’s going to give that illusion of stone or concrete making it look like a piece of pottery.
If you wanted to seal this to protect the finish, you definitely could. I decided not to because I really wanted that beautiful matte finish. And I find that with decor, you don’t really have to seal it because it’s not touched every day.
I love the way this one turned out.
Word Signs: Thankful - Grateful - Blessed
Ok, yes… I am all of these things. Thankful. Grateful. And Blessed. But I think I’m a little over this sign of mine, and I’m pretty sure this trend is on it’s way out.
I definitely wanted to add some texture to my farmhouse makeovers, so this was the perfect piece to experiment with. The first thing I did was take a piece of sandpaper to it because the font was pretty raised. I buffed it out a little bit and cleaned it off.
I then grabbed some spackling paste (yes, the kind you’d use to patch up holes in your wall), and smeared it on the canvas in every direction.
My goal is to get a really textured, white, and simple canvas that I can hang up or place on a shelf.
Once it was completely covered, I played around with the strokes to make sure there was enough variation. I made sure to cover the sides as well. And that was it! It took about two days for this to dry because of how much spackle I used, but when it was ready to place on my shelf, I LOVED the texture it gave to my vignette.
Farmhouse Galvanized Spheres
I had these fun, galvanized decorative spheres, and I really like the shape of them. I’m just ready to see a new finish on them. So I decided to gild them with gold, brassy gilding wax (Dixie Belle Gilding Wax Gold).
I just love this color… to me, it’s the perfect gold. I use it a lot on the hardware in my furniture makeovers.
This one took a little bit of trial and error because I started to apply it with a little brush, and it didn’t go as planned. I wasn’t getting enough of the color on there. So I grabbed a rag and applied it with that instead of the brush, and that worked a lot better. But then I had trouble getting to the under part of the sphere.
So then I thought a better idea would be to spray paint everything and then go back and put the gilding wax over that. That worked great. I do like the spray paint, but there’s something about this gilding wax that I love.
After the spray paint dried, I applied the gilding wax on top. Once they dried for 12 hours, they were ready to go on the shelf. I love them and am excited to use them in some furniture makeover staging soon!
Galvanized Plant Pot
Okay. Next up is my little pineapple plant, which I love, but I wanted to give this more of an earthy look and, again, get rid of the galvanized metal look.
This was super simple because I used the same technique that I used on the glass bottle.
I grabbed some terracotta-colored paint (Dixie Belle Paint Terracotta) and added the paint thickener. Again, you can use baking soda if you don’t have this paint additive. I did the same stippling motion when applying this paint and made sure to do the inside of the pot as well.
I didn’t seal this one either because I wanted to keep the chalk-like finish. This one came out so cute! Super simple and natural tones, but gives it a whole new, clean look.
Farmhouse Style Distressed Lantern
You guys, these lanterns. I LOVED these when I first bought them, but now, they are just way too distressed for me. And I do love this coastal color, but I’m doing away with it too.
Things went smoothly with this project because, lucky for me, I was able to slide the glass right out and paint with no interference.
I went ahead and used the same Melange Paint Jett Black that I used on the glass bottle. I used my triangle Zebra brush which was so perfect because I was able to get in all of the little edges and crevices. If you wanted to do it even faster, you could totally spray paint as well.
Once everything was dry, I cleaned the glass and then added it back in.
This was definitely my favorite makeover of the bunch. These lanterns were so farmhouse style before, and now they have a whole new modern look.
Farmhouse Style Metal Tub
Again with the metal. It’s not a bad thing. But I definitely wanted to give my home a more muted and earthy vibe. So the excessive metal had to go. And this metal tub was just begging for a DIY makeover.
I started by removing the rope handles. And to save time, I did use spray paint for this project. I grabbed my Krylon Fusion Textured Sandstone spray paint. This is going to give me the same finished look as the paint and thickener technique.
I plan on having a pillow and throw blankets in here, so I sprayed the inside as well. I wasn’t too worried about getting full coverage since it will just be peeking through a bit.
Side note: the one downside with spray paint is that it’s really stinky. Make sure to spray in a well-ventilated area or outside and wear a mask.
The color ended up being beautiful and is a great contrast to all of the black paint I’ve been adding. I love the texture. I love the color. So I would definitely recommend this product to update decor.
Greenery Swap Out
My final makeover of the video is going to be a vase… and I’m going to take a different approach. I’m actually not redoing this vase at all, but I wanted to show you that you don’t have to do a complete makeover to get a new look!
All I did here was swap out the greenery with some dried pampas grass from Hobby Lobby that I got for $10. I didn’t have to do anything to the vase, and this swap gave it a whole new look.
So is Farmhouse Style Dead in 2022?
Although I don’t think it’s dead, I was definitely ready for some change. And I had so much fun doing these DIY farmhouse style decor flips.
